Interpretive Planning

Do you need an interpretive plan for your site, institution, or exhibition?

Interpretive planning helps develop consensus on a vision for interpretation. It lays a foundation for the visitor experience. It helps ensure that your purpose and significance are aligned with themes and stories, and in turn, all interpretive services -- person-to-person and/or media-based.

During a collaborative, interactive planning process, our job is to listen to you. In the resulting plan, we reflect back your vision, themes and stories, audience summary, goals or objectives, and strategies for services. To help you prioritize, where appropriate, we organize recommendations into a timeline of quick solutions, midterm enhancements, and long-term transformations.
We can help with:
  • Workshops
  • Focus groups
  • Field trips to survey best practices
  • The interpretive plan: themes, topics, and stories; audience analysis; visitor experience goals/objectives; interpretive/media strategies; recommendations for implementation; implications for staff, volunteers, etc.

Historic Interior Planning

Do you need a furnishing plan for your historic house or other site?

Every historic site has an organic history. We work with you to determine the best interpretive approach for your site. Should it reflect a specific point in time? Should it be based on the story of one person or family? Should it include stories from throughout the site’s history? Once the approach is determined, we can research, write, and -- if requested -- help implement a plan for the site, including recommendations for appropriate furnishings and interior treatments.
We can help with:
  • Furnishing plans
  • Hybrid interpretive/furnishing plans
